More about Portland, Maine in June: Our city is often ranked one of the best places to visit by … every magazine. We’re a foodie city with a ton of local fare. The ocean is … right there. You and your officiating buddies could stay a day or two extra and here would be my ideal day: Start your morning at Tandem Bakery with the best biscuit you’ve ever had, loaded with butter and jam. Then head down to the beach for a sea kayak tour of an old abandoned fort (it’s its own island in the bay!). If you’re not up for a paddle, take a ferry trip to Peaks Island and bike around in the salty air. For lunch, grab a lobster roll on one of our historic wharfs in the Old Port. Then you could walk on 10 miles of trails - including a paved, roller-skate friendly oceanside path called the Eastern Promenade which is beside a historic and adorable train line (which you can ride). Grab dinner at one of our James Beard award winning restaurants. Or maybe head to a campsite at the Desert of Maine — a strange geological oddity that made a sandy “desert” in coastal Maine (Freeport, home of an entire LL Bean campus). While in Freeport, you could take one of LL Bean’s many outdoor classes to learn how to stand up paddleboard, or shoot clay “pigeons” with a shotgun (seriously). Also, my league is full of really nice people, and we will like you.
